Regional Update
August 2008
Welcome to the adventures and exploits of Potteries and South Cheshire MG Owners Club, June saw us return to Tatton Park Classic Car Show, I had forgotten just how big this show really was, it was ginormous, a true Classic Car Show when you have 2000 vehicles to look at and numerous trade stands it has the makings of an extremely busy weekend.
We were situated in the middle of the action, albeit the plot being a bit on the small side for all the vehicles that we took to this event, as we are all friends in this club being cosy wasn’t a problem, sharing a bacon sarnie was pushing it though.
As we attended both days for this show the only thing that marred the weekend was the Sunday weather, it was wet, but Saturday was so hot in complete contrast.
Four of us from this club “bit the bullet” at the beginning of June and went to Disneyland Paris for a Classic Car Show, and what a splendid weekend it turned out to be. Although there were 7 MG’s in attendance flying the flag it was a great shame that more MG clubs and MG owners did not undertake this adventure. I believe it is taking place again in 2009, if you see it do it we were parked in Disneyland itself close to the heart of where everything was going on and amongst what I can only say were a very varied and beautiful selection of classic cars.
Of course the worst part of all the travelling was the journey to and from Folkestone, but it was a truly pleasurable journey once you had crossed the channel by Euro tunnel and got onto the French roads, this was what can only be called enjoyable driving. After leaving Disneyland on the Sunday morning for the trip home we were taken to a chateau at Compiegne for a visit to a motoring / transport museum, there were some strange and very interesting exhibits, very strange though, the guides locked the doors after you had gone through them.
This weekend the club also took on a new first time venture, this time to the Evesham Festival, based by the river in the centre of Evesham, loads of things to see and do and a thoroughly enjoyable time, and convenient shopping access to the town for the Ladies. A good run both ways had been organised by David, who seems to get pleasure out of planning these runs, and all this taking place in brilliant sunshine, now there’s a novelty.
Trentham, a little earlier this year but still a very popular show with everyone at our club, and another great big turnout this year by the members, Trentham has all the ingredients for a brilliant day out, shops for the Ladies, cars and autojumble for Men, and additionally the beautiful gardens which are improving year on year. This year though we have an extra interest, as one of our members has got a proper job and started working there as a designer etc on one of the gardens, we were looking for his workmanship on the day. As an added bonus this year the weather was also kind to us, which as usual nobody is in any rush to leave the showground.
A Tuesday night outing, to the Plough and Flail in Mobberley, was very pleasant quite a few of us decided to make the trip, in total about 30+ MG’s turned out for the evening, after some storms during the day the evening was very pleasant and we were able to sit out in the garden and enjoy the sandwiches and chips that the local club had provided. Mick O had taken the helm to get us there avoiding Alderley Edge, he didn’t really miss the last turning he just wanted to make the enjoyment of the run last a little longer, good on ya Mick.
Sunday the 22nd saw our friends from South Staffs MG club hold their now annual fund raising day on Cannock Chase, a beautiful setting for the day but on this occasion it was horrendously windy, you were very wary as to where to park your car with all the trees around, quite a few of us made the trip and thoroughly enjoyed the day. South Staffs had organised two routes today, the first one going off around Ironbridge Gorge, while the second route took the road run back up towards our home ground of the Churnet Valley, those of us who went today tried out both routes between us.
Whilst some of the club where being blown about on Cannock Chase other members of the club stayed a little closer to home and making an appearance at the Potteries Custom and Classic Vehicle Show taking place in Hanley town centre, this will be the first time we have visited this one, about 40 vehicles of various shapes and sizes were in attendance, but like so many other events on a day like today the weather took its toll, the wind being strong and cold today people with soft tops do tend to think twice before venturing out. I still try to think positive the weather will get better, I know it will really.
The final Sunday of the month saw us going to Langley Fete, this is a typically country fete, but the last time we went it had two stalls and us, this time however was totally different the field was full of stalls and stuff going on as well as a varied and interesting array of classic and vintage cars on display. The day started well with Cadders saying he would organise a run before actually arriving at Langley, and what an excellent job he did, starting in Leek, after some “interesting” roads we ended up for coffee at Buxworth Marina, before finding some more “interesting” roads on the way to Langley, overall another great day out.
